RRRRR! It has sure been a winter already, hasn’t it? There is no doubt which season is upon us, but in the darkest, coldest winter days, we still have hope that spring is on its way, at least that is what the calendar says. Though it seems endless right now, it will end.
The winter and spring seasons have long been used as analogies for Chris tians. Winter is often paralleled to our hardships and struggles of this world, and, of course, spring is the hope that they will pass, just as Jesus promised in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” I am reminded of the song that begins with the words, “There is coming a day when no heartache will come.” Can you name the song? The answer is the hymn…What a Day That Will Be. Jim Hill wrote this hymn in honor of his mother-in-law, who was paralyzed. It is a hymn of hope and promise of what Jesus promised in Revelation 21:4, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Yes, we will suffer here. We will endure the winter, but we have always had the hope of the spring. So, as we look forward to the green grass, warm days, and beautiful flowers, may it remind us of the promised land to come, where there will be no winter! Note: I’m writing this the day before I travel to Bermuda for a short respite from the cold and on the eve of Winter Storm Fern. Best wishes to you all and stay warm! I’ll be thinking of you!
